Understanding Electrostimulation
Electrostimulation (or electrotherapy) is the therapeutic use of low-level electrical currents to stimulate muscles and nerves. It has been used in clinical physiotherapy for over 60 years and is now widely available for home use through CE-certified consumer devices like those in the Tesmed range.
There are two primary types of electrostimulation relevant to Tesmed devices: EMS (Electro Muscle Stimulation) and TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). While both use electrical current delivered through electrode pads placed on the skin, they target different structures and serve different purposes.
EMS — Electro Muscle Stimulation
EMS uses electrical impulses to directly trigger motor nerve fibers, causing involuntary muscle contractions. It is used for muscle strengthening, athletic conditioning, recovery acceleration and body toning. The contractions produced are physiologically identical to voluntary exercise.
TENS — Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation
TENS targets sensory nerve fibers rather than motor nerves. It works primarily through the Gate Control theory of pain — the electrical signal competes with pain signals traveling to the brain — and by promoting the release of endorphins. Used for chronic and acute pain management.

Possible Side Effects
When used correctly, side effects are rare and mild. The most common are:
Mild skin redness — at the electrode site — normal and temporary. Usually resolves within 30 minutes after removing the pads.
Mild skin irritation — may occur with very frequent use or sensitive skin. Reduce session frequency and ensure skin is clean and dry before application.
Muscle soreness — after EMS training sessions, similar to post-exercise soreness. Allow adequate rest time between sessions (minimum 48 hours per muscle group).
Tingling or prickling sensation — during use — this is normal and indicates the device is working correctly. Reduce intensity if sensation is uncomfortable.

No. Electrostimulation uses very low-level currents (typically 0–80 mA) that are specifically calibrated to stimulate nerve and muscle tissue safely. Electric shock involves unpredictable high-voltage current. EMS and TENS devices include multiple safety features and are CE-certified medical devices.
Yes, combining active exercise with EMS (known as active EMS training) can amplify results significantly. Performing bodyweight squats, planks or other exercises while the device is active maximizes muscle fiber recruitment. Always start at lower intensity when combining with movement.
For EMS muscle training, we recommend 3–4 sessions per week per muscle group, with at least 48 hours rest between sessions. TENS pain relief programs can be used as needed, up to several times daily. Always follow the specific guidance in your device manual.
EMS typically uses frequencies of 20–100 Hz to stimulate motor nerves and produce muscle contractions. TENS uses a wider range (2–150 Hz): low-frequency TENS (1–10 Hz) triggers endorphin release for longer-lasting pain relief, while high-frequency TENS (80–150 Hz) provides immediate pain gate-blocking effects.
EMS is best used as a supplement to conventional training, not a replacement for it. It can accelerate results, support recovery and maintain muscle tone when active exercise is not possible (e.g. during rehabilitation). For general fitness, we recommend combining EMS with an active lifestyle.
